At NCCI we value the people we work with. Justice is as much about compassion as it is about accountability and truth.

Advocacy, Investigations
& Case Management
When a family has gone missing or is murdered and the case has gone cold, navigating the criminal legal system can be overwhelming and frustrating.
The NCCI team is experienced with investigations, advocacy and the law. We also understand the challenges and complexities of our legal system while experiencing a loss. This is especially true when the justice system fails or access to justice is inadequate. Our skill is matched only by our compassion.
We provide comprehensive case management to guide and support families to advance justice. This includes helping families find legal professionals, forensic and other experts, communicating with law enforcement and providing advice.
We thoroughly review case files, analyze information, and help to explore and open new leads. Our team of experts is dedicated to uncovering the truth behind unsolved cases in an effort to bring closure to families seeking answers.
Law Reform
Every cold case we work on informs our knowledge of the gaps and barriers that undermine access to justice for families of missing and murdered people. While we help families seek justice, we also work to change the system and laws to enhance access to justice for future families.
Effective laws and thorough criminal investigations are foundational to an effective legal system and access to justice. This is true for victims and for those who are convicted in our justice system. Our goal is to improve access to justice by promoting just and equitable laws, promoting best practices, and advocating for human rights at all levels of the Canadian criminal legal system.
We draw upon our expertise and the information we gain from working directly with people impacted by homicides or disappearances to inform our research, promote stronger laws, and enhance access to investigative resources.

Research & Education
At NCCI we believe that investigations can be strengthened through ethical technological innovation, data science and research. NCCI is led by innovative thought leaders who are committed to ensuring justice is accessible and that investigations in Canada are effective.
Using interdisciplinary methods we undertake research initiatives to advance our understanding of serial homicide, cold cases, missing persons cases and wrongful convictions that can be used to promote more effective laws and investigative practices in Canada. We provide training and education to professionals and students interested in learning. Our commitment to human rights, equality and justice form the foundation of all of our work.
Currently NCCI is home to Dr. Reid's Missing and Murdered Database and the Serial Homicide Database.
